Causes and Symptoms of Pet Asthma

Just like asthma in humans, asthma in pets is the body’s overactive response to a trigger in the environment. The body reacts to the trigger with lung and airway inflammation, which causes asthma symptoms. Any animal can develop asthma, but cats are much more likely to acquire the condition than dogs. Small dogs are more likely to develop asthma than large dogs. 

Just like humans, there are certain environmental factors that can make an animal more likely to develop asthma. If an animal is exposed to secondhand smoke, air fresheners, air pollution, large amounts of dust (especially cat litter dust), and mold. Some animals even exhibit asthma symptoms after being exposed to candles and/or cooking odors. 

Panting is a normal way for a dog to cool down, but excessive panting can be a sign of asthma. Occasional panting can be normal for cats, especially if you live in a hot climate or your cat is participating in strenuous physical activity. Panting in cats can also be a sign of a cardiovascular problem, so it’s important to talk to our veterinarian about this symptom. Other signs of asthma in animals include taking a long time to cool down or catch their breath, wheezing, coughing, and breathing more quickly than usual.
