Fractures in pets often occur from a trauma, such as the impact of a car or leaping from a height. Depending on the impact, a dog fracture or cat fracture may be a simple hairline fracture, multiple-piece fracture or compound fracture. At our Scarsdale Animal Hospital, our skilled and compassionate vet will perform a physical exam and take X-rays to assess the extent of the fracture. Depending on the diagnosis, internal stabilization or external stabilization may be required. External stabilization utilizes splints or cast to immobilize a fracture, such as a hairline fracture. Internal stabilization requires surgery and the application of metal plates and pins. The goal is to properly align the bone, keep in stable and enhance properly healing. The healing time for fractures varies. Younger pets can heal in a few weeks, while it may take months for more mature pets.

Internal Stabilization for Dog Fracture or Cat Fracture

If internal stabilization is needed for your pet due to a dog fracture or cat fracture, you can feel confident that our trained vets will take good care of your four-legged friend during the procedure. Our surgical tables are heated, and your pet’s vitals will be monitored with pulse oximeter and EKG.
