How to Prepare Your Cat for Surgery

Preparing Your Cat For Surgery

Pet surgery is a part of almost every cat’s life. While some may only go under the knife once when they are spayed or neutered, others often require surgical procedures, such as biopsies, exploratory surgery, and lump or mass removals.

No matter what the reason for the surgery, medical procedures can create a lot of anxiety and confusion for owners and their pets. Here is some information you need to know when scheduling an appointment with your Scarsdale, NY, veterinarian at Central Animal Hospital for routine procedures, as well as what to expect from the surgical procedure, hospital stay, and home recovery.

Before Your Pet Surgery

Central Animal Hospital understands your concerns for the well-being of your cat. Before any type of surgery, we recommend that you check with your veterinarian about what you need to do to prepare for it. This includes:

  • Check with your vet to see if you should administer any medications the morning of surgery
  • As your vet, if your cat needs to refrain from food and water for 24 hours before the procedure
  • Try to prevent your cat from playing rough and getting sore muscles the day before surgery
  • Purchase any special foods your cat may need for his or her aftercare

Returning Home from Surgery

Once your cat is released from our animal hospital after surgery, follow your veterinarian’s instructions exactly, and make sure to call anytime you have concerns or questions. Because an incision requires time to heal, restrict your cat’s activities, even if he or she seems to be doing fine. If your cat was sent home with a surgical cone, ensure that he or she wears it. Also, make certain that your feline isn’t licking or chewing at the incision to prevent infection. Pay attention and report any appetite or attitude that isn’t normal to your vet.
